Why knowing the sugar level in the blood is important?
The level of your blood sugars explains how well your diabetes is managed. And the management of diabetes means you are less likely to have serious health problems, such as kidney disease and eye problems.
As you check your blood sugar, you can see how much your sugar goes up and down,
for example, you can see that when you eat certain foods, your sugar number increases and, you can see when you take your medication and are active, your sugar goes down this information tells you what’s working for you and what needs to be changed.
How is blood sugar measured?
There are two ways to measure blood sugar
- Blood sugar tests that you do automatically tell you what your blood sugar level is at the time of your test.
- A1C test indicates your average blood sugar levels in the last 2 to 3 months.
How do I check my blood sugar?
You use blood glucose meters to check your blood sugar. This device uses a small drop of blood from your finger to measure your blood sugar levels. You can buy it from a medical store or online.
Read the instructions that come with your meter to learn how to check your blood sugar. Your health care team can also show you how to use your meter. Write the date, time, and result of the exam in your blood sugar records. You take a record of your blood sugar each time you go to the doctor and talk about your results with your health care team.
Sugar levels for people with diabetes?
People with diabetes try to get the goal of blood sugar at different times of the day. These goals are:
- Before your meal: 80 to 130
- Two hours after the start of the meal: below 180
- Talk to your health care team about whether your blood sugar levels are correct
How often should I check my blood sugar?
The number of times your blood sugar is tested depends on 2 things. For example, people who take insulin may have to check more often than those who don’t take insulin to talk to your doctor about how often you have to check your blood sugar.
These are the times for checking your blood sugar, first when you first wake up (fasting), 2-before meals, 3-2 hours after meals, and bedtime. Talk to your doctor about what is the best time to check your blood sugar.
What should you do if your blood sugar becomes too high?
High blood sugar is also known as hyperglycemia. This means that your blood sugar level is higher than your target level or exceeds 180. Having high blood sugar levels over time can cause long-term, serious health problems.
If you feel too tired, feel more thirsty, have blurred vision, or need to urinate more often, your blood sugar may be higher.
Check your blood sugar and see if it’s above your target level or 180. If it is too high, one way to reduce it is to drink a large glass of water and exercise fast running. Call your health care team if your blood sugar exceeds 3 times in 2 weeks and you don’t know the reason.
What should you do if your blood sugar is too low?
Low blood sugar is also known as hypoglycemia. This means that your blood sugar levels are below 70. Having low blood sugar is very dangerous and requires immediate treatment. Anyone with diabetes can have low blood sugar if you take insulin or some pills for diabetes, there is a high likelihood of low blood sugar.
Keep with you the items you need for the treatment of low blood sugar, check your blood sugar if you are instability, too much sweating, or too hungry. Even if you’re not feeling any of these things, but you think you have low blood sugar, do it.
If your meter indicates that your blood sugar is less than 70, immediately do one of the following things:
- Chew 4 glucose tablets
- Drink 100 ml of fruit juice
- Drink 100 ml regular soda, no diet soda
- Eat 4 pieces of hard candy
After taking one of these treatments, wait for 15 minutes, then check your blood sugar. Repeat these steps until your blood sugar is 70 or above. After withdrawing your blood sugar up to 70 or more, eat breakfast if your next meal is on 1 hour or more.
If you often have low blood sugar, check your blood sugar before driving, then drive and treat if it is low.
