Vyoshadi Guggulu is multi herbal ayurvedic medicine useful in weight management. This medicine is Guggul-Kalpa. Guggulkalpa means medicines containing an equal or more amount of Guggulu as compared to amount of other ingredients. Guggul is gum resin of the Commiphora mukul tree. Guggul has anti-inflammatory, hypolipedemic, antiseptic, antibacterial, astringent, antispasmodic and antifertility properties.

Method of preparation:
Take all the ingredients of the pharmacopoeial quality. Wash, dry and powder the ingredients numbered 1 to 9 of the formulation composition separately and pass through sieve number 85, weigh them separately in the required quantities and mix.
Crush weighed quantity of Guggulu-Shuddha, add fine powder of other mixed ingredients to it and pound well. Add Eranda oil to an extent required to facilitate the pounding and continue pounding till a semisolid uniformly mixed mass of suitable plasticity is obtained.
Expel the mass through Vati machine fitted with a suitable die and cut the Vatis to a desired weight. Roll the Vatis on flat surface to round them by circular motion of palm covered with a glove and smeared with Shunthi oil or use suitable mechanical device.
Dry the rounded Vatis in a tray-dryer at a temperature not exceeding 600 for 10 to 12 h. Pack it in a tightly closed container to protect from light and moisture.

Guggulu is gum resin obtained from Commiphora mukul, a tree found in arid- subtropical to tropical climate. It is a highly effective in the treatment of Vata-Vyadhi and due to its thermogenic, digestive, anti-inflammatory, carminative rejuvenating and tonic activities.
Guggulu / the gum resin contains guggul sterons Z and E, guggul sterols I-V, two diterpenoids- a terpene hydrocarbon named cembreneA and a diterpene alcohol- mukulol, a-camphrone and cembrene, long chain aliphatic tetrols- octadecan-1,2,3,4-tetrol, eicosan-1,2,3,4-tetrol and nonadecan-1,2,3,4-tetrol. Major components from essential oil of gum resin are myrcene and dimyrcene.

It reduces serum triglycerides, LDL (bad) cholesterol and increases HDL. It can reduce 14-27 percent blood cholesterol and triglycerides by 22-30 percent. Guggulu increases metabolism of LDL.

In a clinical study, Vyoshadi Guggulu and Haritaki Churna were given to a selected group to evaluate the efficacy of these two Ayurvedic medicines on obesity. The treated group age ranged from 16-65 years and duration of treatment was three months. The dose of Vyoshadi guggulu was 3 tablets (each of 500 mg) and Haritaki powder was given 3 gm with lukewarm water both before the meals. The result found significant improvement in B.M.I., sr triglyceride levels, waist circumference and other clinical features. The combination also gave relief in allied symptom of obesity such as breathlessness, confusion, paraesthesia and fatigue.
