Triphala Guggul Ayurvedic Remedies

Triphala guggul or guggulu is an Ayurvedic formulation. This medicine is Guggulkalpa. Guggulkalpa means medicines containing an equal or more amount of guggul as compared to amount of other ingredients. Triphala guggul is prepared from Triphala, Guggulu and Pippali powder.

Guggul is gum resin of the Commiphora mukul tree. Guggul has anti-inflammatory, hypolipedemic, antiseptic, antibacterial, astringent, antispasmodic and antifertility properties. It also works as a carrier for other drugs. Classical Ayurvedic texts recommends not to take guggul as a single drug but it should be administered along with other herbs in combination.

The other ingredient of this medicine is Triphala. It is a combination of pericarp of three fruits Amla, Haritaki and Baheda. Triphala is a Rasayan or tonic. It improves digestion, cures constipation, removes toxins and eases bowel movements. It detoxifies the body.

Triphala guggulu is indicated in all type of pain due to vata dosha, piles, fistula, inflammation, constipation, etc. Due to its laxative property it gives relief in constipation, piles and fistula. Guggulu gives it pain reducing and pain relieving property.

Triphala guggulu is used for weight loss, treating piles, fistula, constipation and for joint pains.

Ingredients of Triphala guggul tablets

Triphala Guggulu Vati is a preparation made with the ingredients in the Formulation composition given below with Guggulu as the basic ingredient.

Formulation composition:

  1. Haritaki Terminalia chebula P. 48 g
  2. Bibhitaka Terminalia belerica P. 48 g
  3. Amalki Emblica officinalis P. 48 g
  4. Pippali Piper longum Fr. 48 g
  5. Guggulu -Shuddha Commiphora wightii O.R. 240 g

Method of preparation:

Take all the ingredients of the pharmacopoeial quality. Wash, dry and powder the ingredients number 1 to 4 of the formulation composition separately and pass through sieve number 85, weigh them separately in the required quantities and mix.

Crush weighed quantity of Guggulu-Shuddha, add fine powder of other mixed ingredients to it and pound well. Add Ghrita to an extent required to facilitate the pounding and continue pounding till a semi-solid uniformly mixed mass of suitable plasticity is obtained.

Expel the mass through Vati machine fitted with a suitable die and cut the Vatis to a desired weight. Roll the Vatis on flat surface to round them by circular motion of palm covered with a glove and smeared with Ghrita or use suitable mechanical device. Dry the rounded Vatis in a tray-dryer at a temperature not exceeding 600 for 8 to 10 h. Pack it in a tightly closed container to protect from light and moisture.

Description: Spherical pills, black in color with agreeable odour and bitter taste.

Storage: Store in a cool place in a tightly closed container protect from light and moisture.
