Pet Saffa Natural Granules is a proprietary herbal ayurvedic medicine from Divisa. This medicine is for constipation. It has laxative and purgative in action. Laxatives are those agents which stimulate or facilitate the evacuation of the bowels. Purgatives are agents which tend to cleanse or purge, especially causing the evacuation of the bowels.
This is a good medicine to get relief from occasional / acute constipation. But one should avoid its excessive and prolonged use.
There are many reasons why a natural laxative should not be used excessively. This the main ingredients of this medicine is Senna leaves (35g/100g) and salts (Black salt 12g/100g + Rock salt 5g/100g= 17 g/100g).
Senna leaf is a habit forming laxative. If you are using it for extended period of time you may become dependent on it for motion, also the constipation will become severe once you discontinue taking it. Senna stimulates intestine and can cause abdominal pain and cramp. Prolonged use and overdose of it can cause loss of electrolytes especially potassium, diarrhea, impairment of bowel function by damage to autonomic nerves.
Senna leaves are not for weak and malnourished people. It should not be used during menstruation/period. The use of Senna leaves in pregnancy is controversial. Few reports suggests its use is safe during pregnancy. But as Senna is hot in potency, it stimulates bladder and bowel and hence it should be better avoid in pregnancy. In pregnancy one should opt for safer laxative option such as Isabgol bhusi.
Senna is contraindicated to people with heart conditions and digestive disorders such as Crohn’s diseases, ulcerative colitis.
Daily use of this medicine will increase the daily intake of salt or sodium. Excess intake of sodium can cause many health complications. As the sodium increases in the body, retention of water takes place to dilute it. This increases both the amount of fluid surrounding cells and the volume of blood in the bloodstream. Increased blood volume means more work for the heart and more pressure on blood vessels. Over time, the extra work and pressure can stiffen blood vessels, leading to high blood pressure, heart attack, and stroke.
