Pancreas Tonic is a herbal mixture of traditional hypoglycaemic Ayurvedic herbs and used in the treatment of diabetes mellitus. It is available as a dietary supplement.
Pancreas Tonic causes a significant reduction in blood glucose levels due to the regeneration of pancreatic b islet cells. The regeneration is mainly due to the presence of Pterocarpus marsupium. The other herbs of Pancreas tonic potentiate the actions of Pterocarpus marsupium.
This medicine is indicated in the management of diabetes. Diabetes is a metabolic disorder causing excessive thirst and the production of large amounts of urine. Vijaysar (Pterocarpus marsupium) is a deciduous tree of the family Leguminosae. It is also known as Asana, Bijaka, Priyaka, Pitashaala, Bijaysaar, Vengai, Peddagi, Red kino tree and Bijayasal. Vijaysar lowers blood sugar and lipid level. The heartwood of the tree is used to make tumblers in which water is kept overnight and taken next day.
Vijaysar restores the normal insulin production of the pancreas and stabilizes the normal sugar levels. It may also lower blood sugar through an unrelated pathway of that of insulin making it useful in the treatment of both types of diabetics. It regenerate, reverse the damage and repopulate the ß-cells in the pancreas.
Cinnamomum tamala Fr. Nees., belonging to family Lauraceae, is known as Indian Cassia, bay leaves and Tezpatta. Tejpatta is bitter, sweet, aromatic, antioxidants, anti-hyperglycemic, anthelmintic, diuretic, carminative and anti-inflammatory. It detoxifies blood, improves appetite and digestion.
Jamun (Syzygium Jambolanum, Synonym Eugenia jambolana, Family: Myrtaceae) or Indian black berry has antidiabetic properties and reduce in blood glucose level. It increases serum insulin levels. The seed powder of Jamun fruit exhibits normoglycemia and better glucose tolerance.
Gudmar (Gymnema sylvestre, family Asclepiadaceae), is a woody climber found in central and peninsular India. Gudmar is one of the main herb used in Ayurveda to treat diabetes due to its hypoglycemic activities. For the medicinal purpose roots and leaves of the plant are used. The chewing of leaf lowers cholesterol, triglycerides, lipid and blood sugar level. Gudmar controls the sugar level as it increases insulin secretion, regenerates islet cells, increases utilization of glucose, and inhibits absorption of sugar from intestine.
Gudmar is bitter, acrid, anodyne, anthelmintic, antipyretic, astringent, cardiotonic, digestive, diuretic, emetic, expectorant, laxative, stimulant, stomachic, uterine tonic. Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum graecum family Fabaceae) has anti-diabetic and hypocholesterolaemic activities. The seeds have been used as an oral insulin substitute, and seed extracts have been reported to lower blood glucose levels.
Bitter melon(Karela) (Momordica charantia family Cucurbitaceae) is well-known bitter anti-diabetic herb, the fruits and seeds of this plant are been reported to exert hypoglycemic effect. It contains several chemical constituents, including the glycosides (mormordin and charantin) and alkaloid (mormordicine). It also contains an insulin-like polypeptide called Polypeptide-P. Polypeptide-P has been designated as the plant insulin which lowers blood sugar levels when injected subcutaneously gerbils, langurs and diabetic patients.
Neem leaf (Azadirachta indica, family Meliaceae) it is also known as margosa, nim, nimba, nimbatiktam, arishtha, praneem. The leaves contain nimboin, nimbinene, 6-desacetylnimbinene, nimbandiol, nimbolide and quercetin. Leaves are also reported to contain ß-sitosterol, n-hexacosanol and nonacosane. Neem is a tonic and a revitalizer, it works effectively in the treatment of diabetes and it has been found to reduce insulin reguirements by up to 50% for diabetes, without altering blood glucose level.
It significantly reduce insulin requirements for insulin dependent diabetes and have also been scientifically proved to be effective in treating and preventing diabetes. The possible mechanism of anti-hyperglycemic effect of Neem leaf was found to be reduction in peripheral utilization of glucose and suppression of glycogenolytic effect due to epinephrine action.
