Medicinal use of Ajwain or Carom seeds

Ajwain is very useful seeds used to cure many health condition like digestive system problems, Bad breath, neuralgic pain and many more.

Ajwain or carom seeds are very well-known and are present in every Indian home. In India we add it to our various dishes, curries which are difficult to digest. Carom seeds are antispasmodic, stimulant and carminative.

It is used to treat various clinical conditions such as abdominal gas, atonic dyspepsia, diarrhea, abdominal tumors, abdominal pains, piles, and bronchial problems, lack of appetite, galactogogue, asthma and amenorrhoea. It is very good for the digestive system. It has antifungal, antioxidant, antimicrobial, antispasmodic, broncho-dilating, diuretic and anthelmintic properties.
In Ayurvedic medicine it is used to cure stomach ailments. Ajwain seeds oil (1-3 drops) is used treat Cholera, flatulent colic, diarrhea, atonic dyspepsia and indigestion. Ajwain water which is prepared by boiling crushed ajwain seeds (1 tbsp) in a glass of water for 10-15 mins, is used to improve digestion and give relief from gas. Here are few remedies that can be done at home using carom seeds for treating various clinical conditions.

  • Diarrhoea, dysentery
    Take Carom seeds (1 tbsp), boil in water (150 ml). When water reduces to half of it, filter and drink.
  • Indigestion,  flatulence, dyspepsia
    Ajwain is very good for the digestive system. It is used to cure indigestion due to irregular diet. Take ajwain (1 tbsp), rock salt and mix in water and take to cure indigestion, gas and dyspepsia.
  • Stomach ache, cough
    Take ajwain, chew and swallow. Drink a glass of lukewarm water.
  • Improving digestion, appetite
    Make powder of ajwain seeds and soak in milk. Filter and drink.
  • Colic
    Take Ajwain seeds, dry ginger (sonth) and black salt in equal amount. Grind them together to make powder and take this powder (3 gms) with lukewarm water.
  • Flatulence
    Take Ajwain seeds, sonth(dry ginger) in equal amount. Soak them in lemon juice. Drain the juice and dry them. Grind them to make powder. Add black salt. Take this powder (2 gm) with luke warm water, 2-3 times a day.
  • Bad breath
    Chew Ajwain seeds to get rid of bad breath.
  • Cough
    Take Ajwain seed powder with buttermilk.
    Nasal congestion
    Take Ajwain seeds (1 spoon), crush and tie in cloth. Inhale this to decongest nose.
  • Pharyngitis (sore and congested throat) and hoarseness
    Take water and bring it to boil. Now add crushed Ajwain seeds and cook for 10 to 20 mins. Then filter, add salt and Drink.
    Bronchial asthma
    Tie Ajwain seeds in a cotton cloth, heat in a frying pan and apply on the chest and neck when still warm.
  • Rheumatic pain, neuralgic pain
    Apply ajwain oil topically to get relief from pain.
  • Amenorrhoea
    Soak ajwain, badam in lemon juice at night and chew next morning.
