Haridra (also known as Rajni, Nisha, Nishi, Haldi, Haladhi, Turmeric) consists of the dried and cured rhizomes of Curcuma longa Linn. It mainly contains essential oil and curcumin. It is bitter, and pungent in taste (Rasa), pungent after digestion (Vipaka), and is hot in effect (Virya). It is Ruksha (drying) in quality (Guna). Turmeric balances vitiated Kapha and Pitta. It is anthelmintic (Krimighna) and poison-destroying (Vishaghna). It is used in all type of the skin diseases both internally and externally. As it is drying in nature, it reduces excessive phlegm in the body. It detoxifies blood.

Haridra is a broad spectrum medicine effective in indigestion, poor circulation, cough, cold, flu, skin disorders, diabetes, arthritis, Madhumeha, swelling, fever, bacterial infection, intestinal worms, the liver complaints, stammering, filaria, sprain, boils, wounds, conjunctivitis, thirst due to phlegm, allergic reactions, etc.

Trikatu, combination of dry ginger, black pepper and long pepper (Sonth + Pippali + Kali Mirch) is effective for burning Ama (metabolic waste and toxins) which is the prime cause of all disease. It supports better digestion by stimulating the liver to secrete bile and also balances Kapha.

Triphala (Amla + Harad + Baheda) is a tonic for the whole body. It has been used in various gastric disorders including intestinal inflammation. Amla, has significant acid lowering, cooling and anti-ulcer properties. Triphala is a rich source of tannins, which is known to affect the integrity of mucus membrane. Tannins with their protein precipitating and vasoconstriction effects could be advantageous in preventing ulcer development.

Vidang / Embelia ribes Burm / false black pepper, is anthelmintic (Krimighna), ascaricidal (kills roundworm), carminative, antibacterial, antibiotic, hypoglycemic, antifertility, antibacterial and febrifuge properties. It is the main herb used in Ayurveda for the treatment of intestinal parasites. It is useful in all abdominal disorders, constipation, gas, indigestion, piles, etc.

What is Sheet-pitta/Sitapitta?

Shita-pitta is an Ayurvedic name of Urticaria or nettle rash. In this condition, swallon rash or raised swell patches appear on the skin. These patches are very itchy. Such patches can occur on some body parts or all over the body. Sometimes urticaria is caused by an allergic reaction to some specific foods.

As per Ayurveda, the reason for Shita-pitta is aggravation of vata and kapha along with vitiation of pitta.

  1. It can also be given to babies but the dose willl be accordingly adjusted depending on weight, condition and digestion.
  2. In the case of recurrent urticaria, it should be taken for 2-3 months.
  3. For allergic rhinitis it should be taken for 2-3 weeks.
  4. It contains many hot spices and iron and should not be taken more than 12 grams/day.
  5. This medicine should be preferably taken after the meal.

  2. It contains turmeric which reduces Kapha but increases Pitta and Vata if taken in excess. Turmeric increase dryness and heat in the body.
  3. It contains turmeric, Trikatu, and other hot potency medicinal herbs. Therefore people suffering from Pitta roga, hyperacidity, bleeding disorders and ulcers should take it cautiously.
