Habbe Azaraqi is prepared from herbal ingredients such as Azaraqi (Strychnos nux-vomica linn.), Filfil siyah (Piper nigrum linn.), Filfil daraz (Piper longum linn.), and Ajwain (Trychespermum ammi linn).

In Unani, Habb­e means a pill prepared from the powder of ingredients, some solution, and binder. As the chief ingredient of this medicine is Azaraqi, it is named as Habb-e-Azaraqi.

Unani System of medicine evolved in Greece, and was first introduced to India by the Arabs. It is also called as Greco-Arab medicine, Unani Tibb, Arabian medicine, or Islamic medicine.  Hippocrates is known as the father of this system of medicine. The theoretical framework of Unani medicine is based on his teachings.

It is a traditional medicinal system, and commonly practiced in South Asia.   • Piper nigrum (Filfil Siah) 62.5 mg
  • Piper longum (Filfil Daraz) 62.5 mg
  • Strychnos Nux-vomica, Detoxified (Azaraqi) 125 mg
  • Aqua Trachyspermum ammi (Arq Ajwain) q.s.

Strychnos nux-vomica

  • Nux-vomica is also known as Azaraqi, Azaaraaqi, Kuchlaa, Kuchla, Qaatil-ul- kalb, Khaaniq-ul- kalb/ Habb-al- ghurab, etc.

Few important points about Nux Vomica are given below:

  • It is considered Hot, and Dry in the fourth degree.
  • It has Moharrik Aasab (Nervine Stimulant) quality which means it stimulates the nerves to increase their activity.
  • It is Moharrik Dimagh (Brain Stimulant: stimulate the brain, and increase its activity).
  • It is Musakhkhin (Calorific increase body warmness).
  • It is Moharrik Doran Khoon (Circulatory Stimulant increases blood circulation, and blood pressure). It may produce tremor, and spasm in muscles. If there is paralysis in the spinal cord or general paralysis of the body, these drugs may be beneficial.
  • It stimulates respiration.
  • Nux-Vomica is Sammi (Poisonous/toxic), and hence first it undergoes Tadbeer-e-Advia (Detoxification/Purification) for medicinal use.

Piper nigrum (Filfil Siah)

Kali Mirch (Synonym: Piper nigrum) is commonly used spice with Analgesic, Antibacterial, Antioxidant, Antiseptic, Digestive, Emmenagogue, Expectorant, Sialagogue, and Stomachic properties. It is used traditionally in the treatment of Anorexia, Colic, Constipation, Congestion, Cough, Dyspepsia, Dysuria, Fever, Gas, Hemorrhoid, and Water Retention.

Piper nigrum is added to medicines for drug potentiation. It improves the bioavailability of phytochemicals.

Piper longum (Filfil Daraz)

Piper longum is known as Filfil Daraz, Pippali, Pipal, Long Pepper, and Dried Catkins. It is fruits of a plant Piper longum. It is pungent in taste, hot in potency, and sweet after digestion.

The main organs on which it works are digestive, reproductive, and respiratory. It has analgesic, anthelmintic, aphrodisiac, carminative, and expectorant properties, and is used in the treatment of digestive, and respiratory ailments such as gas, bloating, distension, digestive weakness, excess phlegm, asthma, bronchitis, colds, coughs, and laryngitis. It is also used in rheumatic pain, gout, paralysis, etc. as it reduces Vata inside body, gives relief in pain, and digests Ama (toxic waste produced in the body to incomplete digestion).

Pippali increases Pitta inside the body. So, people of Pitta nature should use it cautiously. Moreover, the long term, and excessive use of Pippali is contraindicated.

  • All preparations of Nux-vomica are prescribed under medical supervision.
  • The medicine must be taken in the lowest dose, and only for 1 to 2 weeks.
  • This medicine is not suitable for the long term use.
  • Effectivity of herbal medicine depends on many factors. A medicine suitable for one person may not essentially give the same result in another person.

Contraindications
