Salicylic acid (ortho-hydroxybenzoic acid) is a beta hydroxy acid agent. Due to its antihyperplastic effects on the epidermis, it is used as a peeling agent. Salicylic acid peels are used in case of acne vulgaris (inflammatory and non-inflammatory lesions), acne rosacea, melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, freckles, lentigines, mild to moderate photodamage, and texturally rough skin.
Salicylic acid has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties.
When used in combination with benzoic acid, Salicylic acid has fungicidal properties. The combination of these two topical agents is more effective than when used singly.
Salicylic Acid, a keratolytic agent, softens and loosens crusts and scales on the skin and promotes shedding of the outermost skin layer which increases penetration of Benzoic Acid in the skin to control infections. Together, these agents provide better protection against superficial fungal infections.
Salicylic Acid may cause the following undesirable effects:
Local irritation, skin inflammation, signs of salicylate toxicity (e.g., thirst, tinnitus or ringing in the ears, loss of hearing, headache, dizziness, vomiting, diarrhea, depression and disorientation) and allergic reactions including itchy rash, anaphylaxis and erythema multiforme (skin reaction characterized by small, red skin elevations or blisters arranged around a common center).
Benzoic Acid may cause the following undesirable effects:
Irritation, itchy rash and allergic reactions.
Zinc oxide is used as a protective coating for mild skin irritations and abrasions. It sooths, protects and promote healing of chapped skin, diaper rash. It helps in the restoration of epithelium during wound repair by unknown mechanisms of action.
