About Sodium Picosulfate

  1. Sodium Picosulfate is a contact laxative.
  2. Its molecular formula is C18H13NNa2O8S2.H2O
  3. It is hydrolyzed by colonic bacteria to desacetylbisacodyl, the active metabolite of bisacodyl.
  4. It is used for constipation of any etiology.
  5. It stimulates large intestine causing peristalsis and rectum.
  6. It increases motility and starts urge for motion.
  7. It is used to clean bowel before surgery or medical investigations.
  8. It takes 6 – 12 hours for bowel.

The Dosage of Piclin Table and Syrup

This medicine should be taken once a day, at bedtime. Once getting relief from constipation, reduce the dosage and then discontinue.

Unless otherwise prescribed by the doctor, the following dosages are recommended:

Adults and children over 10 years:

One to two 5ml spoonful (5-10mg of Sodium Picosulfate) at night.

Children under 10 years:

Not to be given without medical advice.

4-10 years: Half to one 5ml spoonful (2.5 – 5mg of Sodium Picosulfate) at night.

Under 4 years: 250 micrograms per kilogram body weight.

Who should not take Piclin or Sodium Picosulfate

  1. Patients with rare hereditary problems of fructose intolerance should not take this medicine.
  2. People with ileus, intestinal obstruction, acute surgical abdominal conditions (acute appendicitis, acute inflammatory bowel diseases), and in severe dehydration should not take it.
  3. Not to be used in patients with a known hypersensitivity to sodium picosulfate or any other component of the product.

WARNINGS

  1. Do not be take continuously on daily basis for the long periods.
  2. Long term, excessive use may lead to fluid and electrolyte imbalance and hypokalaemia. It can cause onset of rebound constipation.
  3. It should not be used in pregnancy, especially in the first trimester, unless the expected benefit is thought to outweigh any possible risk to the foetus.
  4. Use of this medicine is not recommended during breastfeeding.
  5. It may cause abdominal discomfort, abdominal pain and cramps, diarrhea.
  6. Some allergic reactions (including skin reactions and angio-oedema) have been reported.
  7. Do not store above 25°C.
