Wart (Massa in Hindi) is very common skin disease caused by virus known as human papillomavirus (HPV). Warts can be different type depending upon size, color, appearance, etc. Normally warts are self curable and get away itself within 2 years. Wart can spread to other body part and to other person in contact(very uncommon). Generally warts are painless but in some cases it may cause bleeding and pain. It wart is causing bleeding and pain then you must visit a doctor.
Symptoms of warts
Most warts are raised with a rough surface. They may be round or oval.
The spot where the wart is may be lighter or darker than the other skin. Rarely, warts are black. Some warts have smooth or flat surfaces. Some warts may cause pain.
Here are list of different types of wart:
Common warts – often appear on the hands, but can grow anywhere.
Flat warts – Generally found on the face and forehead. They are common in children. They are less common in teens, and rare in adults.
Genital warts(condyloma) – usually found on the genitals, in the pubic area, and in the area between the thighs. They can also appear inside the vagina and anal canal.
Plantar warts – found on the soles of the feet. They can be very painful. Many of them on the foot may cause problems walking or running.
Subungual and periungual warts – appear under and around the fingernails or toenails.
Diagnosis of wart
Usually a dermatologist can diagnose wart disease by examining it and it can be diagnosed by skin biopsy.
When you should visit a doctor in case of wart disease:
- You have signs of infection (red streaking, pus, discharge, or fever) or bleeding.
- You have a lot of bleeding from the wart or bleeding does not stop when you apply light pressure.
- The wart does not respond to self-care and you want it removed.
- The wart causes pain.
- You have anal or genital warts.
- There is any change in the color or appearance of the wart.
Treatment of Wart
- Over the counter medicines are available but you should not use OTC medicine for wart treatment for genital warts
- Laser and electrocautery treatment for difficult to remove warts
- Skin medicine called imiquimod
- A new medicine called veregen may be used on genital warts as well as other warts.
- Your health care provider may recommend the following treatments if your warts do not go away:
- Stronger (prescription) medications, such as podophyllin or salicylic acid
A blistering solution
- Freezing the wart (cryotherapy) to remove it
- Burning the wart (electrocautery) to remove it
- Laser treatment for difficult to remove warts
- Immunotherapy, which gives you a shot of a substance that causes an allergic reaction and helps the wart go away
- Skin medicine called imiquimod
Ayurvedic natural Remedies for Warts or Massa
- Kaseesadi Taila: apply this oil on the wart and cover it with a cotton bandage
- Castor Oil: apply this oil on the wart and surrounding area, cover it with cotton
- Aloe Vera: Apply over the infected area thrice a day. Continue for a week, warts will disappear within days
- Papaya Milk: The milk extracted from the papaya fruit is effective in removing warts. Apply on the warts regularly
- Clove Oil: Apply on the warts, continue for a week, you will get the desired effect within days
- Amalaki or Indian gooseberry: Extract juice from Amalaki and apply on the warts. Cover it with cotton, continue this treatment for a week or more
- Onion: Rub onion on the warts regularly
- Potato: Rub a piece of raw potato on the warts thrice a day.
