Eladi Vati For Respiratory Infections

Eladi Vati or Gutika is polyherbal Ayurvedic medicine in tablet form which is used in the treatment of dry cough, throat infections, hiccups, vomiting, cold, fever, dizziness, blood vomiting, abdominal pain, etc. Medicines prepared in the form of tablet or pills are known as Vati and Gutika. Eladi Vati contains lesser cardamom, Mulethi, Mishri, Munakka, pippali and other demulcents which make it very effective in upper respiratory and gastric problems. It reduces excessive Pitta and soothes throat. It is a natural aphrodisiac and useful in all bleeding conditions. It should be sucked as lozenges in throat infections and hoarseness of voice.

Ela/ Elaichi, is known as lesser cardamom in English. It is cool in potency. It is Tridosh-har, digestive, carminative, nutritive, laxative, and expectorant. It has diuretic action and gives relief in urinary disorders. The seeds are useful in asthma, bronchitis, throat disorders, piles, gas, vomiting, digestive disorders and cough.

Tejapatra is the dried mature leaves of Cinnamomum tamala, It is hot in potency. It has Kapha-Vatahar properties. Tejpatta increases Pitta. It cures piles and improves taste. Tajpatta is bitter, sweet, aromatic, anthelmintic, diuretic, carminative and anti-inflammatory. It detoxifies blood, improves appetite and digestion. It is used in Ayurveda for the treatment of anorexia, mouth dryness, cough, cold, nausea, vomiting, gas and indigestion.

Pippali is heating, stimulant, carminative, alterative, laxative and useful in cough, hoarseness, asthma, dyspepsia, paralysis, etc. Pippali powder is used with honey to treat cough, asthma, hoarseness, hiccup and sleeplessness. It is an alterative tonic.

Draksha (big grapes) Vitis vinifera, has nutritious, sweet, refrigerant, laxative, demulcent, hematinic, hemostatic, cooling and expectorant properties. Draksha is indicated in cough, asthma, bronchitis, affections of eyes and throat, Bright’s disease, gout, jaundice, thirst, heat of the body, cough, hoarseness and general debility.

Mulethi or Licorice Root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) is extensively used in Ayurveda. Licorice relieves coughs, sore throats, respiratory problems, abdominal pain, and hyperacidity. It is used to prepare cough remedies, skin preparations, and in combination with other plants for the treatment of ulcer. It should not be used in the high blood pressure, fluid retention, diabetes, and certain other conditions.

Mishri is raw sugar or sugar candy. It consists of lumps of crystal. It has demulcent action and gives energy. It has cooling and aphrodisiac action. Mishri intake increases weight. It reduces Vata/wind inside the body. It improves the taste of medicine.

Kharjura or Khajur, obtained from a tall tree found arid parts of the country. It is cool in potency and sweet in taste. It nutritive and gives strength to the body. It is Pittahar and Vatahar. Khajur is indicated in the treatment of burning sensation, hiccups, fever, cough, bleeding disorders, excessive thirst, and Pitta disorders.

The Dosage of Eladi Vati

1-2 tablets twice a day. It may be sucked or taken with honey.
