Pippalyadi Lauha is a herbomineral Ayurvedic medicine. It is referenced from Bhaishajya ratnavali, Hikka shvasadhikara. Pippalyadi Lauha is indicated in the treatment of hiccups, asthma, cough, vomiting, diseases due to vitiation of pitta, congestion due to cough, dry coughing, etc.
The herbal ingredients of this medicine include Choti pippali, Amla, Ber ki guthli (kola), Vidang and Pushkar mula. It also contains honey and Mishri. The only mineral ingredient is Lauha Bhasma.
It is a Lauha kalpa. Lauha kalpas are Ayurvedic medicines having Lauha Bhasma (calyx of iron) as the major ingredient along with the other herbal ingredients. These formulations have “Lauha” as suffix in their name. For preparing Lauha Kalp, the medicinal herbs are reduced to fine powder and mixed with Lauha Bhasma. Bhavana is given with prescribed liquids if mentioned. When well protected from moisture and heat, Lauha Kalp keep their potency for a period of two years.

Key Ingredients
Choti pippali/Small Pippali is known as Small pepper;Catkins (small). It contains not less than 0.4 percent w/w of piperine, calculated on the dried basis. Choti pippali is pungent in taste and have characteristic aromatic odour. Pippali is heating, stimulant, carminative, alterative, laxative and useful in cough, hoarseness, asthma, dyspepsia, paralysis, etc.
Pippali powder is used with honey to treat cough, asthma, hoarseness, hiccup and sleeplessness. It is a alterative tonic.
Draksha, is sweet, refrigerant, laxative, demulcent, hematinic, haemostatic, and expectorant. Draksha is indicated in cough, asthma, bronchitis, affections of eyes and throat, Bright’s disease, gout, jaundice and general debility.
Amla is nutritive tonic of Ayurveda. It is healing and rejuvenating. Its intake gives good eyesight, keeps hair black and helps in better absorption of iron. It is a rich source of Vitamin C.
Vidanga has carminative and hepatoprotective activity. It is anthelmintic, astringent, alterative and tonic.
Lauha Bhasma is calcined iron. It is an inorganic preparation. The process of Lauha Bhasma preparation involves several steps, including Shodan (purification), Maran (powdering), Chalan (stirring), Dhavan (washing), Galan (filtering), Putan (heating) and Mardan (tirturating).
Loha Bhasma is extensively used in Ayurveda. It increases hemoglobin level, gives strength and cures anemia, edema. Iron is tonic that increases strength, vigour and gives longevity. It is helpful in all sort of diseases.

Lauha Bhasma is useful in anemia (Panduroga), chlorosis, visarpa, heart’s affections, phthisis, scrofula, general debility, sexual debility, Bright’s disease, Prameha (diabetes), Yakshma (tuberculosis), Krimi Roga (worm infestation), Kshinatwa (cachexia), Sthaulya (obesity), Grahani (bowel syndrome), Agnimandya (dyspepsia), Shula (spasmodic pain), Visha (poisoning), blood impurity, jaundice, the liver and spleen complaints, pain, asthma, piles, skin disease.
