Anu thailam is an Ayurvedic herbal oil indicated in Ashtang Hridaya for various disorders of the head, eyes, nose, ears, throat and hair. Anu taila is used for Nasya Karma. What is Nasya Karma?
Nasya Karma or Errhine therapy (Errhine{er-ahyn}means designed to be snuffed into the nose) or inhalation therapy, is an Ayurvedic term for administration of medicine in various form through nasika/nasa or nostrils. It can be defined as therapeutic measure where oil, decoction, ghee, juice, churna is administered through nose to eliminate the vitiated Dosha in head.
Nasika/Nasa or nose is considered gateway of the head, nerves and Nasya karma help to the liver the medicine to brain. Nasya Karma is done in diseases of supraclavicular region or region above the collar bone and include headache, migraine, greying of hairs, baldness, earache, facial palsy, speech problems, cold, cough, tonsillitis, sinusitis, rhinitis, etc. It is the most important therapy for the treatment of Diseases of the head and neck.
Nasya is avoided in acute fever, acute coryza, excessive secretion from nose and indigestion. For Nasya, the oil is instilled in nose. The head should not be shaken during nasya karma and taking, sneezing, laughing should be avoided.

Method of preparation:
– Take all ingredients of pharmacopoeial quality.
– Treat Tila taila to prepare murcchita Tila taila.
– Wash, clean, dry the ingredients numbered 1 to 24 of the Formulation Composition, powder separately and pass through 355 μm I. S. sieve (sieve number 44) (kvatha dravya).
– Add water for decoction to the kvatha dravya and soak for 4 h, heat and reduce the volume to one-tenth. Filter through a muslin cloth to obtain kvatha.
– Divide the kvatha into 10 equal parts and store separately in air-tight containers protected from light and moisture.
– Wash, clean, dry the drugs under ingredient number 26 (kalka dravya) of the Formulation Composition, powder separately and pass through 180 μm I. S. sieve (sieve number 85) to obtain a fine powder. Transfer the powdered ingredients to wet grinder and grind with a sufficient quantity of water to prepare homogeneous blend (kalka).
– Take murcchita Tila taila in a stainless steel vessel and heat it.
– Add increments of kalka, stir thoroughly while adding one part of kvatha.
– Heat with constant stirring maintaining the temperature between 500 and 900 during the first hour of heating. Stop the heating when the kalka gets separated at the bottom of the vessel in the form of loose paste (mridu paka lakshana) and at the appearance of froth (phenodgama) over the oil. Allow to stand overnight.
– Repeat the process for nine more times each day adding one part of kvatha. Along with the 10th part of kvatha, add Ajadugdha in last paka.
– On the last day, constantly check the kalka by rolling between the fingers. Stop the heating when the kalka easily rolls into a varti without sticking (madhyama paka lakshana) to the fingers and at the appearance of froth (phenodgama) over the oil. Expose the varti and oil to flame and confirm the absence of crackling sound indicating absence of moisture.
– Filter while hot (about 800) through a muslin cloth and allow to cool.
– Store it in glass containers and pack them air-tight to protect from light and moisture.

How to use Anu taila
- First massage the head, face, nose with oil and foment the area.
- Now Lie down with head slightly tilted backwards, facing the ceiling. Soak Anu taila in cotton and put 2 to 6 drops in one nostril. Inhale the oil through the nostril while keeping the other nostril closed. Repeat the same for second nostril.
- The soles, palms, ears, forehead are rubbed for a few minutes. The oily substance or Kapha accumulates in throat and should be spit out. Do twice daily for 2-3 weeks or as required.
