Herbal Nishamalaki for Diabetes

In Ayurveda Amla is used with turmeric to treat diabetes. The name of this herbal Ayurvedic preparation is Nishamlaki. Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is known as nisha and Amla as amalki in Sanskrit. So this preparation containing both is known as Nishamalaki. It has the goodness of both. Amla is well-known for its effects on eyesight. It is an anti-oxidant that prevents free radical damage. It is tridoshnashak and balances vaat, Pitta and kapha. Turmeric has an antioxidant anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, lipid lowering activities. Both the ingredients are anti-oxidant, tridoshnasak and Rasayana which help to improve overall health.

Ingredients of Nishamalki

  • Nishamalki is prepared by mixing turmeric and dried amla powder in equal amount.
  • It can be prepared at home by mixing powders of both ingredients in equal ratio. It is available in market in churna and tablet form.

Uses of Nishamalki

  • Useful in the treatment of diabetes (Madhumeha in hindi)
    Helpful in preventing associated complications of diabetes such as cataract, retinopathy
  • Helpful in lowering plasma glucose
    Lowers fasting blood sugar levels, symptom of diabetes

The Dosage of Nishamalaki

2-6 gm of Nishamalakichurna twice a day before the meals with honey. It is also available in the form of tablet. Take 1-2 tablet twice a day.
